Illinois State Employee Plan and Weight Loss Medication
Illinois law requires the State Employees Group Insurance Program (SEGIP) to cover certain injectable medications for weight loss and blood sugar control. If you or a family member is covered through state employment, this guide explains the basics. Confirm current details with Illinois CMS Benefits or your plan.
Important safety information. This page is general education, not medical advice. Only a licensed clinician who knows your history can decide whether a medication is right for you. Do not start, stop or change a prescription without talking to your clinician. If you have severe abdominal pain, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or thoughts of harming yourself, seek emergency care or call 988.
What the Law Requires
Beginning July 1, 2024, Illinois requires the state employee health plans to cover injectable medicines prescribed to improve blood sugar or promote weight loss. Coverage applies to adults diagnosed with prediabetes, gestational diabetes or obesity, when a physician deems treatment medically appropriate. Medicaid enrollees and state retirees on Medicare Advantage plans are not covered by this policy.
The Lifestyle Program Condition
Members who start a prescription are expected to enroll in and keep taking part in the plan's lifestyle management program. Failing to participate can affect future coverage. Ask your plan how participation is measured.
What to Do Before You Start
Contact your plan or Illinois CMS Benefits to confirm which medications are covered, whether prior authorization is required, which pharmacies to use and what your copay will be. Coverage details, formularies and requirements can change.
TeleSlim Clinic and State Employees
A TeleSlim Clinic physician can evaluate you by secure video visit from anywhere in Illinois and discuss whether prescription treatment is appropriate. TeleSlim Clinic visits are self-pay and we do not bill insurance for them, but we handle prior authorization for your medication, provide a superbill, and send prescriptions and lab orders to the pharmacy or lab you choose; whether your state plan covers the medication is determined by the plan. See Does Insurance Cover Weight Loss Medication? and TeleSlim Clinic pricing and plans.
